Event information

fRoots magazine presents a regular series of live music nights at Camden's intimate music venue and vegetarian cafe The Green Note. They take place on the 2nd Sunday of every 2nd month.

At 82 years old and still in his prime, Tom Paley is an American roots music legend. Born and raised in New York City, he fell in love with old-time music and began playing guitar and 5-string banjo. He quickly excelled at both instruments, making his first album Folk Songs From The Appalachian Mountains in 1953 and briefly performing in a duo with American folk icon Woody Guthrie.

In 1958 he helped form the New Lost City Ramblers, with Mike Seeger and John Cohen. This group almost single-handedly inspired the greater mainstream interest in American traditional old-time music that continues and thrives to this day.

Tom later moved to Sweden for three years before settling in England in 1965, where he has resided ever since. He continues to tour in America and various parts of Europe, performing solo and with other musicians including The New Deal String Band.

In 1975, Tom took up the fiddle and began trying some of the strange and beautiful fiddle-tunes he heard in Sweden. Banjo and guitar are still his main instruments and American Old-Time music still makes up the bulk of his performance material, but Swedish fiddle-music now ranks equally high in his affections.
