THE TRUE DECEIVERS
The True Deceivers were formed in 2003 from the ashes, as it were, of The Blazing Homesteads. Comprising Homesteaders Nick Bliss (guitar and vocals), Mark Mitchell (fiddle and vocals) and Dee Coley (bass) they joined up with former Plenty frontman Graham Firth (lead vocals and guitar) and Jamie Legg (Eat The Sofa) on drums. They soon made a name for themselves on the live scene with their rootsy folk rock sound punctuated by Mark's stunning fiddle playing and Nick's punchy guitar work. Their influences range from Steve Earle to Bob Dylan, The Waterboys and Tom Petty. Following Mark's sudden death in March 2009 the band reverted to a more acoustic sound with Dee picking up his acoustic bass and Nick swapping his Telecaster for an acoustic guitar and mandolin. The result is a more stripped down sound whilst still retaining the band's ear for a melody and losing none of the power of the original line up.
PLENTY
Plenty formed from the bones of Eat The Sofa and quickly evolved as Dee Coley and Jamie Legg left (to join The Blazing Homesteads and Mega City Four) after a few gigs and were replaced by Deck Miguda on bass and Jay Williamson on drums. Joining with founder members Graham Firth and Eat The Sofa guitarist Duncan Siggers, they quickly developed a harder edge and took their indie rock sound to several Guilfests and other prestigious venues such as London's Rock Garden. A well received EP followed before the band split when Jay moved to Australia.
HIS WOODEN FISH
Back in 1988 three guys set out playing a brand of music they called Swivel Rock. Graham Firth (acoustic guitar and lead vocals), Rich Steer (fretless acoustic bass and vocals) and Dee Coley (stand up drums and vocals) whipped up a storm in the Guildford area for 9 months and recorded one home made album (Raw Fish) before Graham took himself off to University.
ALLAN BROAD
Allan has been performing his songs since teaming up with guitarist Nick Walsh in the late 80's. As a duo they chalked up hundreds of gigs in the most diverse settings before Allan pursued a musical adventure in the USA. Whilst there he teamed up with the Nashville Recording Factory after being spotted on the TV show Nashville Today.
Allan pursued his love for American roots music and returned to England where he founded The Hometown Boys who evolved into the much loved band Eat The Sofa.
In 1999 Allan moved to The Netherlands where his music took a more introspective and acoustic direction.
TWO WOODEN FISH
4 years after His Wooden Fish split up Graham Firth (Acoustic Guitar & Vocals) returned from University and hooked up again with His Wooden Fish bassist Richard Steer. This time round Richard proved his versatility playing guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, whistle and kazoo! The duo took up a residency at The Parrot in Slyfield alternating Saturday nights and Sunday lunchtimes with Eat The Sofa. Playing a mixture of covers and originals the duo recorded one album, Time & Numbers, before Graham decided to go back packing round the World.
Doors at 7pm. Tickets £5 in advance, £6 on the door from xxxx. All proceeds to the British Heart Foundation in memory of Mark Mitchell.
