Event information

Percussionist, dancer and independent record producer Guy Schalom re-
unites an all-star team of Egyptian master musicians for a rare London
performance to launch his latest CD - the follow-up to the hugely
popular Baladi Blues.
The cosmopolitan metropolis of early 20th Century Cairo attracted many
of Egypt’s folk musicians – very soon they adapted their ancient folk
tunes to their new sophisticated urban environment to create:
Baladi... The ‘popular jazz’ of Egypt, Baladi is improvised oriental dance music
at its best.
Combing fiery Arabic percussion solos, soulful, intricately woven
accordion and saxophone improvisations and a charming and enigmatic
stage presence – The Baladi Blues Ensemble are renewing the tradition
and taking Egyptian Baladi to new heights!
Baladi - the street music of Egypt - emerged in the early 20th Century
through migration of rural musicians to the cities of Cairo &
Alexandria. This “cultural collision” exposed traditional folk
musicians to a Western sensibility, creating a newly sophisticated
hybrid genre. Baladi holds improvisation and interplay at its core.
