Michael Janisch and the New York Standards Quartet

Jazz in the Loft@The Cellar
Monday 19 April
8:30pm-11:00pm

Bassist Michael Janisch’s musicianship and virtuosity have made him one of the most in-demand musicians in the UK and beyond. Arriving in London in 2005, he’s worked with many of the UK’s leading jazz performers and currently teaches at both the Royal Academy of Music and The Trinity College.

He also initiated a unique monthly jazz residency at the Pizza Express Club in London, creating world-class collaborations between US musicians and the cream of UK talent.

Even by his standards the band he brings to the club is something extra special, comprised entirely of seasoned New York musicians.

Saxophonist Tim Armacost’s current band features Bruce Barth, Ray Drummond, and Billy Hart and his CV includes performance and recording credits with Al Foster, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Barron, Victor Lewis, Roy Hargrove, Paquito D'Rivera, Robin Eubanks, Randy Brecker, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and the David Murray Big Band to name but a few.

Gene Jackson has had an extraordinary career since arriving in New York in 1985 but is probably best known for his work with Herbie Hancock's trios and quartets between 1993 and 2000 where, despite numerous personnel changes, he was always in the drummer's chair. He says the trio with Dave Holland and the quartets with Wayne Shorter are high points in his career.

Pianist David Berkman has played in countless bands including those of Cecil
McBee and Tom Harrell as well as having performed, recorded and arranged for numerous jazz luminaries, including Sonny Stitt, Brian Blade, Joe Lovano, Ray Drummond, Billy Hart, Chris Potter and Hank Crawford.

He has performed solo and with his quartet, quintet and sextet at festivals and clubs in the US, Europe and Japan, most recently at the North Sea, Edinburgh, Belfast and Cork Festivals.

Tickets (available at the door) £15, (£12 members, students/under 25s £6)
