Event information

Un-Peeled is a special series of events in Preston and Manchester to celebrate John Peel Day, exclusively featuring artists who recorded radio sessions for the legendary BBC DJ either in their current or previous incarnations.
This warm-up show features The Nightingales, The Lovely Eggs and Ted Chippington.

The Nightingales
(15 Peel sessions! including 2 as Prefects and 5 as Robert Lloyd)

If John Peel sessions are the rock equivalent of England caps, then Nightingales mainstay Rob Lloyd is in Bobby Moore territory, with only The Fall and The Wedding Present notching up more appearances. Forming after the demise of Birmingham’s original punk group The Prefects, the Nightingales recorded a bunch of critically acclaimed singles and albums throughout the 80s. Following a spell out of the game, Lloyd regrouped the Nightingales in 2004 to pursue his uncompromising ‘man in the street verbals over abrasive tunes’ tactical vision. Although you can still dig the guy’s track record, it’s not a nostalgia exercise, the band have put out several albums of great new material, and toured the UK, mainland Europe and the USA several times, buoyed by a constantly changing line-up.

The current formation features Lloyd, original Prefects guitarist Alan Apperley, ex Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson, Andreas Schmid on bass and (former teen) guitar sensation Matt Wood. The re-invigorated Nightingales made a blistering start to 2012, releasing their latest album 'No Love Lost' on new label Cooking Vinyl to across the board rave reviews.

The Lovely Eggs
(singer/guitarist Holly recorded 1 Peel session with Lancaster band, Angelica in 1999)

The Lovely Eggs are an underground punk rock duo from northern England.

They have a fierce punk rock ethos that music should have no rules.

For Holly and David being in a band is a way of life. True to this, they live the way they play. Fiercely, constantly in search of the good times.

With observational and often surreal lyrics about life The Lovely Eggs have a powerful stripped down sound: one vintage guitar amp, one Big Muff distortion pedal, a guitar and a drum kit.

With releases in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan, The Lovely Eggs have played hundreds of gigs around the UK, USA and Europe supporting the likes of Half Japanese, Shonen Knife, The Slits, The Television Personalities and Art Brut as well as a two month tour of America and a string of dates at SXSW in Austin, Texas (where they also recorded with legendary musician Jad Fair).

The Lovely Eggs have recorded sessions for BBC Radio One, BBC 6 Music and XFM as well as being played by UK DJs Huw Stephens, Marc Riley, Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie, Sean Keavney, Bethan Elfyn, Rob Da Bank, Tom Robinson, Gideon Coe, John Kennedy, Chris Hawkins, Jon Hillcock and Tom Ravenscroft.

They have produced two albums.

The first 'If You Were Fruit' (on Cherryade Records) ranked in the top 40 records of the year by Artrocker Magazine and was nominated for XFM's 'Debut Album of the Year'.

The second 'Cob Dominos'(Cherryade Records, 2011) has gained widespread critical acclaim, with 'Don't Look At Me (I Don't Like It)' (featuring a video with guest appearance from John Shuttleworth) fast becoming an internet hit.

In December 2011, The Lovely Eggs released 7" single 'Allergies' on the Too Pure Singles Club Label. It was produced by Gruff Rhys and sold out before release day. The track also won the BBC 6 Music Rebel Playlist - with 82% of the public vote, was declared winner on Steve Lamacq's 6 Music Round Table and was Artrocker's single of the month. The song featured a death-shaped psychedelic spectacular promo vid made by Casey Raymond featuring a guest appearance from Gruff Rhys.

Their latest 7" single 'Food' was released on Cherryade Records in May 2012, with yet another mind bending stomach churning video by Casey Raymond. The track has since been remixed by Cornershop and will be available soon.

The Lovely Eggs have become well known for their live performances and have played everywhere from Amsterdam squats and Los Angeles scrap yards to steam trains in Ripley and charity shops in Leeds.

The Lovely Eggs live in Lancaster, England.

Ted Chippington
(no sessions, but many Peel show appearances!)

As well as being a fixture on the Peel show, Ted, like the Nightingales, is another favourite of comedian Stewart Lee, who has described the self-styled ‘top entertainer’ as ‘the first post-alternative comedian’. Stew thought so much of him he organised a “Tedstock” benefit in 2007 to fund the production of a career-overview 4 CD box set. Ted routinely flouts comedic conventions. Assuming a diffident on-stage persona, he offers a kind of anti-humour based on a selections from a series of well-worn jokes and banal ‘true stories’ which fall painfully short of anything that can be described as observational comedy. This is interspersed with karaoke versions of well-known songs, such as Ottwan’s “D.I.S.C.O.” and Alvin Stardust’s “Feel Like Buddy Holly”, performed in a similarly listless style. Although he has picked up a group of devoted fans, Ted says that he only started doing his act “to annoy people” and even claimed that his main reason for retiring from the stage in the 1990s was that he was becoming too popular.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Ted’s best performances were saved for away trips in front of drunken scallies or uncomprehending pub bores. After the flurry of ‘Tedstock’ activity in 2007, Tuff Life Boogie thought Ted had retired, but we are delighted to welcome him back to Preston, where he’s been booed off at least twice. No longer sporting his Teddy Boy outfit, Ted now reflects his move to the West Country by wearing ‘Torquay Chinos.’ More info: http://www.myspace.com/revtedchippington
