Nigel Price Organ Trio plus special guest Vasilis Xenopoulos
Jazz in the Loft@The Cellar
Monday 15 October
8:30pm-11:00pm
Nigel Price is a brilliant guitarist who regularly performs as part of the House Band at Ronnie Scott’s in London, and whose influences are rooted in the Blue Note ‘groove’ era of Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Donald Byrd. Together with Matt Home on drums and Pete Whittaker on Hammond organ this is one of the most exciting jazz units in the UK today and in 2010 were winners of the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards for “best jazz ensemble”.
Phenomenal drummer Matt Home has toured with Barry Harris, Herb Geller, Scott Hamilton, Howard Alden, Ken Peplowski, Jim Mullen and many others. He too is also a house band regular at Ronnie Scott's club and spent 3 years with Ray Gelato.
Dynamic organist Pete Whittaker has been involved with many jazz projects including Theo Travis' "Double Talk" and guitarist John Etheridge's "Blue Spirits".
Formed in 2002, the trio has played hundreds of venues both in the UK (including Southampton Jazz Club) and abroad, including six residencies at Ronnie Scott’s. The net result of this is a tight-knit chemistry, an enormous repertoire and the ability to put on a well thought-out gig that entertains from start to finish. The band draws unashamedly upon its 1960s influences yet delivers an up-to-date take on the music with its intelligent, enthusiastic, well arranged, soulful and above all swinging brand of jazz.
The trio is augmented for this concert by the brilliant young saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos, who’s been lauded as the rising star of the London jazz scene since his arrival some eight years ago. Originally trained at Berklee College in Boston he moved to London and quickly established himself as an in-demand musician, playing over 270 performances a year. During that time he’s worked with the cream of UK’s jazz scene. Vasilis has also appeared at The London Jazz Festival, Ronnie’s Scotts, Ealing Jazz Festival, The Bulls Head at Barnes and The 100 Club among many venues but this will be his debut at Southampton Jazz Club, so don’t miss it!
