Emmy-Nominee, John Doan is a master twenty-string harp guitarist and storyteller. His Celtic inspired "Eire - Isle of the Saints" won "Best Celtic Album of the Year.” His concert performance includes original as well as expanded arrangements of works by Jimi Hendrix, among others. With the expanded range of the instrument John redefines what is possible to be played on a guitar.
"John Doan's music is both history and dream cast in the whole glorious, resonant range of the harp guitar." Acoustic Guitar Magazine
John’s pioneering efforts to promote the 20 string harp guitar has included composing and recording award winning music for the instrument as well as chronicling the instrument’s history, players and makers in his “In Search of the Harp Guitar” DVD, hosting Harp Guitar Retreats in Oregon, to an International Harp Guitar Festival at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon where he is a Professor of Music. The “John Doan Model” harp guitar is currently being produced at an affordable price in Ukraine in an effort to follow through on his promotion of the harp guitar as a viable instrument in our modern times.
John has performed with a diverse range of artists including pop star Donovan, folk legend Burl Ives, jazz ace Larry Carlton, touring with Mason Williams (of "Classical Gas" fame and more), as a member of the New Christy Minstrels, among others and his virtuoso playing and arranging has attracted praise from no less guitar luminaries than Chet Atkins and Doc Watson.
"...his playing is an exquisite union of the ancient and the contemporary, the austere and the sensual." The Washington Post
