A mesmerizing kaleidoscope of afro-atlantic culture swirled into psychedelic journey of tropical music, driven by deep organic rhythms.
"Stitching together disparate styles with a common ancestry, Family Atlantica have created an album that re-unites rhythms and motifs that have ebbed and flowed back and forth across the Atlantic ocean over the centuries. The story of the roots of modern music is in many ways focussed on this flow of ideas - African rhythms that moved westwards with slavery came back to Africa in the form of Latin music, and dispersed again and here in the space of 20 tracks not many of these stones are left unturned. From short sketches to full songs 'Family Atlantica' tells us an old story that is represented by the diversity of the musicians within the band and yet is also the contemporary story of the bands home: London. Recorded over 4 years in London and Venezuela, Cuban rumba, Venezuelan tambor and tonada, Ghanaian highlife, Ethiopian blues and calypso have been soaked and infused with psychedelia and spiritual jazz to come up with a completely unique and timeless record....."
Miles Cleret, Soundway Records
At the heart of Family Atlantica are three people from three different continents: London born Jack Yglesias, band leader, producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and instrument builder. A veteran of The Heliocentrics and live Quantic bands. His wife Luzmira Zerpa, traditional Venezuelan musician, poet and singer with a magical voice acclaimed by MANU CHAO, and half Nigerian-half Ghanaian percussionist Kwame 'Natural Power' Crentsil.
