Violins at the Movies

Leader of Northern Ballet Sinfonia, Geoffrey Allan will be joined by pianist Gavin Sutherland (currently Principal Conductor of English National Ballet), for an entertaining concert celebrating the violin's role and the music written for it for the silver screen. The programme will include a selection of music from movies which feature concert violinists (fictional or non-fictional) in a starring role such as Provost's "Intermezzo" from the Leslie Howard/Ingrid Bergman film of the same name, and Franz Waxman's "Carmen" Fantasy from "Humoresque". Also heard will be John Williams' Main Title music for "Fiddler on the Roof" and his "Schindler's List". Erich Wolfgang Korngold was one of the finest Hollywood composers, and his Violin Concerto was based largely on themes from his classic Warner Bros. scores. Other composers represented include Miklos Rozsa, Michel Legrand, Angela Morley, Nigel Hess (Ladies in Lavender) - and Mendelssohn! Gavin Sutherland will also perform as soloist, an entertaining diversion "The Piano at the Movies".
