Mike Daisey’s monologue “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs”, starring Grant O’Rourke, is an emboldened, passionate diatribe that will make you question what you thought you knew about one of the world’s most worshipped brands. Daisey explores the legality and morality of electronic sweatshops in China, complete with armed guards, underage workers and the harrowing tales of the toxic effects of hexane in these factories. One of the most talked about pieces of theatre to come out of the USA in the last few years has not been without controversy. After being broadcast and subsequently retracted from the popular radio programme This American Life, this is a tale that has clearly gotten under the skin of audiences and media alike. As a self-confessed “worshipper at the church of Apple”, playwright Daisey tugs at heart strings, and shows how one man’s story might not be able to topple an empire, but it can certainly give it a righteous shove.

“I will never be the same after seeing that show” Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder

“The best original American play so far this year” The Washington Post

“Mike Daisey’s monologue “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” is a remarkable and almost frighteningly timely piece of work, a monologue written by a fan and admirer of the legendary late leader of the Apple corporation, about his own growing misgivings over the conditions under which Apple’s beautifully-designed pieces of electronic kit are produced, mainly in the new Chinese mega-city of Shenzhen.” The Scotsman

Also at Bridport Arts Centre and Dorchester Arts Centre.
