vie]noise[eries

A chance to hear some of the most vital and diverse talents from the Viennese new music scene on a rare visit to the UK, teaming up some of the key players from the London improvising community in an evening that promises minimal improvised electronics, lush electro-acoustics and some old fashioned noise. This concert is the result of musical partnerships forged by the UK rhythm section of Peter Marsh and Paul May and Vienna based violist Wei-Ya Lin while working as part of Conor Curran's Sonnamble project.

1. Klaus Filip (electronics), Noid (cello), Seymour Wright (saxophone)

KLAUS FILIP

Probably the first Viennese musician to use a laptop on stage in the early 1990s, Klaus Filip's work has been driven by 'technological possibilities and the social need to change structures'. Working across film, installation and theatre as well as designing open source software, he's been heard as an improviser alongside John Butcher, Radu Malfatti, Taku Sugimoto, Tim Blechmann and Christian Fennesz.

"For someone with so restricted an improvising vocabulary – sinewaves and almost nothing else – Klaus Filip has built quite an impressive discography" (The Wire)

NOID

Noid (aka Arnold Haberl) is a composer and improviser working with cello and electronics. As well as recording as a solo artist and collaborating with visual artists and choreographers, he has collaborated with Klaus Filip, Axel Doerner, Erik M, Dieb13, Burkhard Stangl, Carl Stone and Mattin among others.

"Haberl mixes an intensity verging on sadism with humour to create challenging, but fascinating music" (BBC)

Viola player and ethno-musicologist Wei-Ya Lin is a former member of The Hibiki String Quartet and has worked with composer Jonathan Harvey. More recently she has worked as an interpreter of new music and as an improviser with Sonnamble and 2pm In The Forest, as well as playing studio sessions and live gigs with a number of more mainstream bands. She also co-organises Vienna's aNOther Festival with Johannes Kretz.

3. Martin Siewert (guitars), Alan Wilkinson (saxophones), Peter Marsh (bass), Paul May (drums)

MARTIN SIEWERT

Martin Siewert plays guitar, lap steel and electronics. He's a member of Trapist, Radian and several other ensembles, working alongside Christian Fennesz, Mats Gustaffson, Oren Ambarchi, Dean Roberts, Wayne Horvitz, Tony Buck and countless others as an improviser and composer. "Siewert's deliberate, poised guitars weave resonant, slightly mournful lines, sometimes looped or fed through unstable treatments that threaten to rip his thoughtful melodics apart." (BBC)
