Their parents met at a camp where Latvians gathered to teach, learn and keep alive their musical singing and traditions. Little wonder their daughters grew up steeped in a love of music and of Latvian folk music in particular. Their music comes from the earth and weather, animal and plant, love and loss and the religion which infused the lives of an agrarian people.
The Dimanta Sisters (Masas Dimantas) offer a rare chance to hear that voice. Their musicianship is consummate and their love of folk dance and the rhythms and playfulness of children's songs are evident too.
Singing siblings have the advantage of time and also of intuitive understanding which can make the ease which they sing together deceptive.
Theirs is not saccharine country music, there is metal in those harmonies, and if you listen closely, you can hear the raw authentic sound of a generation rising, as young Latvians take their heritage into the venues of the 21st Century.
