The Flatmates, part of the mid-1980s British indie pop boom, were part of The Subway Organization, a Bristol record label formed by Martin Whitehead, who was also guitarist and main songwriter for the band. Following the band's formation in 1985, singles such as 'I Could Be in Heaven', 'Happy All the Time' and 'Shimmer' established the band as potentially one of the most successful indie bands of the time, but the Flatmates disbanded in early 1989 before releasing a proper studio album. Closely associated with the C86 scene that included The Soup Dragons, Primal Scream and The Wedding Present, the band's lasting influence can be heard in a raft of new indie pop bands (mainly from the States) including Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast and Bleached.
The Flatmates are now reforming after a gap of 23 years, with a new line-up including singer Lisa Bouvier. They will be playing a mix of new material, and tracks from their compilation album 'Potpourri (Hits, Misses and Demos '85 - '89)', shortly to be reissued in a limited double vinyl edition by Optic Nerve Records. The band also have a track on the mega Cherry Red Records indie pop anthology 'Scared To Happen' which is out in June.
