Music Director : Mark Fitz-Gerald
Chabrier : España
Strauss : Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche, Op.28
Holst : 'The Planets', Op.32
The June extravaganza is almost a ‘Concerto for Orchestra’ concert of works for very large orchestra. Coincidentally all the items celebrate key anniversaries: Chabrier (120 years since his death), Strauss (160th birthday) and Holst (140th birthday). The Planets is scored on an expansive scale and was premiered at Queen's Hall by Holst's friend, Adrian Boult, on the 29th September 1918. Holst's use of orchestration is very imaginative and colourful and its novel sonorities helped make the work an immediate success with audiences at home and abroad. For this work we are delighted to welcome back Roy Rashbrook with a ladies choir drawn from Hart Voices and the Chantry Singers. The hidden female voices bring The Planets to an end from an adjoining room, where the door should slowly close bringing a serene silence to the auditorium and a mysterious end to the FSO's 92nd season.
