I couldn’t get a ticket for The Cambridge Folk Festival this year so I thought the best way to get in would be to form a mob at The Portland, get them all riled up on a heady mixture of pink Pinot Grigio, IPA and some of the finest folk acts the UK has to offer and then storm the gates at about 1am. Who’s with me?
COCOS LOVERS
Operating well beyond the remit of alt-folk, Cocos Lovers (pronounced Co-Coss) are a distinctive musical force, seamlessly channelling influences from Africa, the US Deep South and several other real and imagined corners of the globe, while staying ever faithful to their Kentish roots. Hailing from the small but musically rich town of Deal, they are a close-knit 7-piece band of family, friends and former au pairs. Their music swells with powerful choir-like harmonies and glorious widescreen melodies, and they’ve earned a reputation for fantastic live performances with an ever-changing instrumental line-up of mandolin, banjo, acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica, violin, musical saw, flute and a unique blend of drums and percussion.

WILL VARLEY
Will Varley has been a stalwart of the Acoustic/Folk scene since 2002, playing literally hundreds of gigs through his teens and early twenties. In 2011 Varley recorded his debut album ‘Advert Soundtracks’ and then set out on the road and walked a hundred and thirty miles with a guitar and tent on his back. Starting the tour at London Bridge he headed south east, strolling through the rolling hills of Kent and singing songs to whoever would listen. After almost two years of relentless gigging he finally managed to record 11 new songs in the basement of an old smugglers cottage. Will Varley’s albums “Advert Soundtracks” and “As The Crow Flies” will be available for purchase on the night.

BINEWSKI MURDER (acoustic set)
Better known for raising roofs (and tents!) with their storming pirate funk sets at gigs and festivals up and down the country, they’re just bringing two guitars and a cahon to this one so you’ll just have to listen to the exquisitely crafted lyrics instead of bouncing about like a bunch of speed-addled tiggers.
