terrace cred. presents:
Over twenty odd years Slaid Cleaves has accumulated a batch of remarkable albums. The title track of his new album 'Still Fighting The War' includes the lines 'Men go off to war for a hundred reasons, But they all come home with the same demons' - delivered with delicate passion. There's touches of the best of blue collar Springsteen (and, for regular Greys fan, there's nuances of Kevin Montgomery), but such comparisons don't do proper justice to Slaid Cleaves. Originally from Maine, where he graduated in English and Philosophy, he's built a reputation as one of the mightiest musicians based around Austin Texas. Slaid Cleaves has established himself as a fine performer and songwriter - a splendid craftsman, with a sharp, observant eye and a deft, sympathetic ear. He writes songs that are wry, barbed yet poignant, not cynical; literary songs that tell a story delivered in gripping fashion. Slaid Cleaves has also collaborated on songs like 'Broke Down' with his pal since schooldays Rod Picott, who's proved to be a Brighton and Greys favourite.
Slaid is touring with a fiddle and mandolin player with a diverse background - Chojo Jacques, a formidable soloist and consummate accompanist whose style will perfectly complement Slaid's songs.
Stephen King is a fan (he wrote liner notes for the an album!) - it's not often that I'd put myself in the same category as that chappy. I've wanted to bring Slaid into Brighton for, oh so long. Seems there's plenty of you out there who agree and want tickets already. Form an orderly queue, chaps...
