Event information

Appalachia is a perfect blend of acoustic instruments, voices and musical styles, offering up their own inspired take on American roots music, combining bluegrass, blues, jazz and unique originals into a potent brew that will move you...and make you move!

Featuring gorgeous four-part harmonies, dazzling instrumentals, and an eclectic repertoire, Appalachia perform regularly at festivals, folk clubs, arts centres and music venues, impressing audiences wherever they go. Weaving their spell on guitars, mandolin, banjo, slide guitar and upright bass, the boys in suits never fail to entertain.

At the end of the evening they get the audience clapping, stomping, and singing along when they invite friends of the band and brave strangers soon to be friends onstage for a rousing sing-along finish...huge smiles all around!

Bio
Appalachia has been referred to as ‘bluegrass with a twist’ and this suits the guys just fine. United by a passion for bluegrass music, they come from very different musical backgrounds so it's not surprising that when they play together those influences result in a delightful and eclectic sound.

James Slater (guitar, harmonica) has a love and encyclopaedic knowledge of Americana, particularly California singer songwriters like Jackson Browne. Richard Burley (guitar and mandolin) has a deep love of jazz and improvisational music. Danny Ward (guitar and banjo) is an acoustic bluesman to his fingertips. Doug Hamilton (upright bass) has many influences  trained as a music teacher back home in the States, he played violin in orchestras and marched down small-town Nebraska streets playing trumpet in a marching band.

When they mix it all together on stage, something magical happens and a new musical hybrid is created, one which audiences immediately relate to and love. The Appalachia philosophy is, they’re gonna do whatever it takes to ‘make you good folks smile.’

“They have a wonderful old-time string band sound which I simply love.”
Frank Hennessy, Celtic Heartbeat - BBC Radio Wales

“This is near-impeccable Americana, made in Britain. Four guys from Bristol (UK) make up Appalachia; united by a deep knowledge and flair for various forms of American music, they cover a broader base than their name would suggest. There's blues, folk, jazz and ragtime in the mix here...I have rarely heard any band make this music sound so warm and rich, such is the quality of their playing, their singing, and their arrangements.”
John Davy - Flyingshoes Review

“... crisply delivered with harmonies to boot.”
Uncut

“Good music, tight harmonies, nice suits and the mandolin got hotter and hotter! Foot stompin’ get up and dance music. Look out for all these talented musicians - into all kinds of music and they seem to get everywhere!”
Audience member - Kingshill Art Centre, Dursley

“Appalachia really brought the House alive and the audience loved them. We were hoping for a quality, feel-good night of music and that's exactly what we got. A very friendly band too, it was a pleasure to work with them.”
Jo Lewis - Kingshill Arts Centre

“Appalachia played superbly, wonderful harmonies and energy, bluegrass with a twist, many people saying how much they enjoyed the band.”
Prom Bar, Bristol

“Appalachia went down a storm here at Brewery Arts centre...they have won many new fans. There performance did us proud.”
