‘A Victorian Christmas’ is a festive exploration of the Yuletide our ancestors would have known. Following a highly successful tour in 2011, acclaimed historical entertainment company Blast From The Past invite you to join them in 2012 for an evening of music, song, stories and drama from the time of Dickens and Hardy. The Victorians virtually invented the modern idea of Christmas with crackers, presents, cards and Christmas trees and Blast From The Past explore the origin of these traditions along with some rather more unsavoury customs that have thankfully died out! The three-man cast of musicians and actors invite you to join them for some of your favourite carols (with songsheets provided) as well introducing you to some more obscure but no less beautiful festive songs from the 19th century. They also perform a Yuletide Mummers' Play (a forerunner of pantomime) in which St George vanquishes the villainous Turkish Knight complete with swordfight and chase scene! Finally, there's a Christmas tale of the court of King Arthur – a figure revived in the Victorian era by authors and poets such as Scott and Tennyson. Featuring damsels in distress, deeds of chivalry, an epic quest and of course a happy ending the tale is told in two parts across the two halves of the show. 'A Victorian Christmas' is a show guaranteed to delight and enthrall audiences from young to old. Veering effortlessly from high drama to low comedy, from delicate melodies to full-throated harmonies – join Blast from the Past this winter and let them recapture for you the simple delights of 'A Victorian Christmas'.
