Wassail Night at Charlton House
Residents of the Royal Borough are in for a treat on Friday 13th of December when Global Fusion Music & Arts present their final event of the year at Charlton House, A Wassail Night. There will be local acepella group Morrigan, led by Chris Harrison, The Mock Tudor Band taking us back in time and our very own folk hero Mike Porter.
But the evening will have a folk legend to bring us some Christmas cheer, Wizz Jones. Wizz was inspired by hearing Big Bill Broonzy and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Wizz Jones learnt his guitar licks from the likes of Davy Graham and Long John Baldry whilst playing in the coffee bars of London's Soho in the late 1950's. He then followed the time-honoured buskers' trail from the streets of Paris to the markets of Marrakech during the early 1960's and returned to Britain with a unique acoustic guitar style, an eclectic repertoire and a 'right hand worthy of Broonzy'!
John Renbourn, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards have all named him as an important early influence and now after more than 50 years 'on the road' Wizz continues to tour on the Acoustic Folk and Blues circuit. So we are very privileged to have him visit Charlton House and Royal Greenwich. GFMA Project Manager said ‘ We have had a great year with some amazing events and achieving charitable status in the summer, so a Wassail Night with Wizz Jones and all the other artists is a fantastic way to end such a successful year. But the work goes on we are already planning for next year and we have our on-going Free workshops in Mascalls Meeting Rooms every fortnight, Tai Chi, Singing, Drumming, African Dance and our writers group, thanks to the help of Charlton Triangle Homes’.
