A violinist from the age of six, Dave began touring whilst still a youngster and played with acts like Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger and Charles Parker. After joining the Ian Campbell Folk Group in the early 60s, he went on to play with Martin Carthy.

When they parted in 1969, Dave joined Fairport Convention and his place in British folk history was set. When they disbanded, he continued to play with other folk musicians including Carthy, John Kirkpatrick and Roy Bailey and also formed a close working relationship with Alistair Hulett whilst working in Australia.
