DAVID HONEYBOY EDWARDS

+ Dave Peabody

At The 100 Club

Wednesday 28th May 2008

David “Honeyboy” Edwards is literally a living piece of Delta blues history. Before Seasick Steve, Fat Possum, the sixties British blues boom, before even Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, Honeyboy was among a group of pre-war itinerant Mississippi Delta blues musicians who wrote the blues template in the 1930’s.

Honeyboy is the last of these original Delta blues musicians still playing regularly.

David Honeyboy Edwards was a contemporary of Robert Johnson who was as legend has it, actually present when Johnson was poisoned and murdered. Born in the heart of the Mississippi Delta in 1915, Honeyboy rejected the expected life of a share cropper and hooked up with Delta bluesman Big Joe Williams and followed him hopping and hoboing the freight trains of blues folk lore such as the Pea Vine, the Southern and the Yellow Dog. He then learned to play guitar and sing on the dusty street corners of small Southern towns and the bars and whore houses of New Orleans.

Thus began an astonishing life story that tracks the history of the blues.

Honeyboy was awarded a Grammy this year, however at 93 years old this show will be part of his last ever UK tour.
