“one of the best British-based discoveries of the year.. her success is down to her reworking of the old songs with a blend of delicate soulful vocals, subtle theatrics and a stage persona that could switch from stately to slinky and flirtatious…” The Guardian

With character, charm and emotion, Çiğdem Aslan’s delightful voice takes audiences on a journey to a café aman music house in 1920s Istanbul, to underground Athens during the turbulent '30s, and further back to the 1900s and the shared culture of Greek and Turkish communities of Izmir (Smyrna) and beyond so lovingly depicted in Louis de Bernières historical novel Birds Without Wings.

With passion and humour Çiğdem opens the door on these old songs which speak about everyday life, loves and struggles, featuring colourful characters from petty criminals, folorn refugees, and wide boys, but above all strong women. What Fado is to Portugal, Sevdah to Bosnia, and the Blues to the Mississipi, Rebetiko is to Greece and the Aegean coast. With her band of top-class musicians she revisits the past to make these songs seem as fresh and relevant as if they'd been composed yesterday.

This show features as special guest writer Louis de Bernières himself, whose blockbuster Captain Corelli's Mandolin made him a household name. His book Birds Without Wings was set in the historical town of Kayakoy near Fethiye in South Western Anatolia. Louis de Bernières will participate to talk about his love for the region, the music, and what led him to write the book.

Following the critical success of her album Mortissa ('a strong independent woman'), Cigdem has toured extensively internationally, and is fast becoming a leading proponent of rebetiko as well as being known for her work as singer with the band She'Koyokh.

"a rising star and a truly sublime singer of rebetika... a release of international significance" Evening Standard

"possesses the smokiness that marks a true rembetiko singer" National Public Radio USA

“Aslan’s vocals have the right kind of poise - coy one moment, desperate the next – necessary to make these famous songs live again.” New Internationalist Magazine
