The August Apiary Sessions includes Ekoplekz’s lo-fi sub laden excursions, Astor’s concrete obfuscations, Phantom Chips’ interactive musical interfaces and Rosen’s future organic collages.
After running the influential Guttezbreakz blog between 2003 – 2009, Bristol’s Nick Edwards re-emerged as Ekoplekz in 2010 focussing on his own music. A volatile mix of radiophonics, industrial noise and disintegrated dub, with a commitment to primitive hardware technology and lo-fi cassette recording techniques that proved an unexpected critical success and lead to a steady stream of releases on labels such as Punch Drunk, Mordant Music, Further Records, Public Information and Editions Mego.
Edwards continues to produce music at a feverish rate, both solo (as Ekoplekz, Ensemble Skalectrik and PLKZFX) and in collaboration with others, most notably Ralph Cumbers (as Ekoclef) and Baron Mordant (as eMMplekz). He has gigged extensively around the UK and Europe and in 2014 signed to Planet Mu and released the album ‘Unfidelity’, which has been hailed as the strongest Ekoplekz long-player to date.
Mark Harwood is a writer, publisher and musician recording as Astor. His works encompass a wide variety of sources and techniques as a means of exploring audio that rubs shoulders with narrative, the visual and the hallucinogenic. Astor has two LP’s out, ‘Alcor’ and ‘Inland’ on Kye records (USA). He also runs Penultimate Press which has released Dennis Johnson’s ‘lost’ minimalist masterpiece ‘November’ alongside four books by Graham Lambkin and records by Henning Christiansen, Jacques Brodier, Matthew P.Hopkins and others.
Phantom Chips aka Tara Pattenden is a multimedia artist working with analog electronics, field recordings and soft circuitry. She plays homemade tape manipulators and lunetta style electronics. Her work explores tactile interaction with a particular interest in creating clumsy and awkward interfaces. She makes other worldly monsters embedding them with sonic devices to create wearable, tactile sound machines.
Rosen is sound and visual artist Rachael Melanson. ‘My Background is(n’t) Magic’ is a performance that explores distraction, disruption and cultural osmosis through a collage of bedroom recordings and live environmental elements.
Active since 2009, Apiary Studios runs a cultural programme funded through production facilities and services supplied to the creative industries. Apiary celebrates experimentation and cross pollination, supporting and pioneering projects, education and research.
