On Saturday December 6th we do a very special version of the clubnight. There's nothing to watch on TV that night, and of course all the records on the radio are shite, so we're welcoming along Gordon McIntrye of Ballboy, The Bobby McGees and Simon Love and the Old Romantics for live sets before the club.
If you were around during the final years of John Peel on Radio 1, before the BBC ushered in the abacuses, Ballboy, along with the likes of Hefner, Belle and Sebastian, Helen Love and The Loves, might have danced into your heart via self-cut cassette recordings of the show, featuring some Dutch trance, death metal, German techno, 1940s doo-wop from The Ink Spots and the whistling of Ronnie Ronalde.
The band have five albums and eight EPs of glorious lyrical Pop music, including their latest LP I Worked On the Ships from 2008. Gordon McIntyre is Ballboy's main songwriter, and on the night he'll be pulling up a stool (not in the Noel Gallagher sense), taking out his guitar and making you dance and shiver inside.
The Bobby McGees came along after Peel, inventing tweecore before they re-invented swing jazz. They're the only twee ukulele band to get a 10 star review in Kerrang, and the only one also to be described as "Dostoevsky doing Lonnie Donegan" by The Legend! Everett True.
Simon Love was the main songwriter in Cardiff's aforementioned The Loves, purveyors of the sweetest psychedelic 60s-tinged Pop and regular session guests at Peel acres. Simon now lives in London town, his latest in a line of illustrious bands being Simon Love and His Cock and Balls, their sister band Knickers, and, most recently and currently, Simon Love and the Old Romantics. Expect some old Loves' songs and a raft of new nuggets such as 'Motherfuckers' and 'My Dick'
Following all this jazz, there will of course be a full throttle Ballboy Special version of the clubnight, bucking and fucking like an old dog as Rhys Wrangler said.
We'll be joined by guest DJs Sean (Fortuna Pop!) and Morgan (ex of the Electrocute, Come Out 2Nite and If You Tolerate Bis, Then Kenickie Will Be Next Pop clubs) till the early ours to whip up a shit-kicking, sweat-drenched, tops-off moshpit with new and classic indiepop, new wave, post-punk, 80s synth, French Pop, Motown, Northern Soul, 50s Rock'n'Roll, 20s/30s/40s/gypsy swing and dyed-in-the-wool Ballboy classics.
