International Women’s Day Celebration – Saturday March 7th
International pianist to perform at Charlton House, Mercury Prize winning musician Zoe Rahman will be topping the star studded line-up at the Global Fusion Music & Arts International Women’s Day Event on Saturday 7th March. Project Manager Louisa Le Marchand said’ ‘We are so lucky to have Zoe Rahman back again, she has become a very high profile artist since she performed for us back in 2012’and this is the first time we have had an event on a Saturday Night. We are very grateful to Charlton House and the Greenwich Heritage Trust, we have a really good partnership with them and produce some high quality events’.
Zoe will also be joined by her special guest Amanda Drummond on Cello, which will add an extra dynamic to the performance’. Zoe is one of the brightest stars on the contemporary jazz scene. A vibrant and highly individual pianist and composer, her style is deeply rooted in jazz yet it reflects her classical background, British/Bengali heritage and her very broad musical taste. Zoe won a Mobo award in 2012 for the best jazz act and continues breaking new ground.
This event will also act as a finally for Fair-Trade Fortnight activities that GFMA are involved with in the borough. There will be a performance from Nigerian poet Funmi Adewole reading poems from her new book of poetry ‘Sea Salt in the City’. As well as being an extremely talented wordsmith Funmi, is one of the finest practitioners of African Dance and this mixture of words and dance seems to come to life in her performances as a poet. GFMA will also be welcoming back other International artist, Chinese Pipa player Cheng Yu. This amazing musician leads the UK Chinese Music Ensemble who performed in the Albert Hall, where Cheng Yu was the leading soloist. The evening will have Jewish Singer Minouche Kaftel with South African roots, MC, 18 year old Zarina Macha will be adding her youth and vitality and DJ Debbie Golt will be giving the audience some sounds of the best female artist on disc.
