After our winter break Sue and I are pleased to announce that our music nights Upstairs at the Red Lion, Manningtree will be starting again on Saturday 25th April when we will be hosting a Blues Revue evening featuring Martin McNeill's Bottleneck Blues. We have persuaded Martin to put together a six piece band for the evening which will include Steve "West" Weston on harmonica, Tim Huskisson on piano, JJ Zarbo on double bass, Mark Cecil on drums and featuring special guest vocalist Ruby Florence.

The evening will feature three sets. Martin, a highly-rated slide guitarist, will play stripped down Delta and Chicago blues and Ruby Florence will front the band for a set of soulful songs. The full band promise a blistering final set, with the focus on West's fiery harmonica and Tim's knockout piano.

Ruby Florence is a modern girl with a vintage style. She loves the classic blues, jazz and gospel of Bessie Smith, Peggy Lee and Rosetta Tharpe as well as new wave rockabilly of Imelda May.

West is one of the UK's top harmonica players, leading his own band, the Bluesonics, as well as recording and gigging with artists including Wilko Johnson, Roger Daltrey, Mud Morganfield and legendary blues record producer Mike Vernon. He can recreate the classic sounds of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson while adding a raw energy of his own.

Tim is one of the country's hardest-working musicians, playing more than 300 gigs last in various groups, and he combines a strong feel for blues with a huge talent for jazz.

Bassist JJ is also a singer-songwriter in his own right and might be persuaded to step up to the mic with one of his compositions at the Red Lion.

Exciting drummer Marc has played with a wide range of acts including the Drifters, Robin Trower and Latin Underground, as well as for a number of West End shows including Blood Brothers and Billy Elliot.

Martin says : "I like to use different players for Bottleneck Blues and vary the size of the group to keep the music fresh. I reckon this six-piece 'all-star' line-up is particularly strong -- everyone has something special to offer. That's why we're doing it as a revue-style show, with three distinct sets showcasing blues in different styles."

This promises to be a great evening of blues with a hint of jazz.

Tickets are 10 in advance from the Red Lion, or or 12 on the door.

Doors open at 8pm

We hope to see you Upstairs again soon
