Dana and Susan Robinson are a husband and wife duo hailing from Vermont, USA who specialise in a mellow mix of traditional Appalachian old time music and contemporary acoustic. With fiddle, clawhammer banjo, guitar and mandolin all featuring, the couple’s versatile musicality is complemented by some lovely vocal harmonies. Underpinning many of the songs is the undeniable rhythm of their trademark guitar/banjo sound. Whether it’s quiet or driving, there’s a steady groove to the music that supports the lyrics and delivers the story in an effortless and charming way.
A native of the Pacific Northwest, many years ago Dana relocated to New England, where he discovered both a thriving songwriter scene and the deep well of traditional mountain music. In the early 1980s he settled in northern Vermont and built a house “off the grid” on 30 acres near the Canadian border. He founded a popular bakery, café and folk music venue, and then launched into full-time touring after the release of his 1994 debut CD, Elemental Lullabye. A talented multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Dana provides most of the duo’s lead vocals and also enjoys telling stories and anecdotes as part of the Robinsons’ performances.
Sue grew up in a musical family in New England. She studied piano, oboe, and Scottish fiddle before meeting Dana in 2002 at a house concert. Upon moving to North Carolina, Sue studied with many of the great old time musicians in the Asheville, NC area, and naturally adapted to the on-the-road lifestyle. Her subtle and delicate clawhammer banjo lines give great character to the duo’s music and she lends her rich mellow voice to both harmony and lead vocals.
Dana and Susan have released numerous recordings featuring both original compositions and a variety of traditional songs and fiddle tunes. This hard-working duo tours regularly in the UK and they are a favourite act at a number of folk clubs and festivals on this side of the Atlantic. They often return year after year to venues where they have built up a loyal fan base. Having attended a number of their concerts elsewhere, we at True North Music are delighted to be hosting Dana & Susan at the Harland Café in Sheffield for the first time. The Harland is the perfect intimate setting for the Robinsons’ entertaining mix of traditional music and original songs. Come along early (from 6:30pm) to take advantage of the special evening menu before the concert starts at 8pm.
