Heleen Van Haegenborgh – pianist / composer :
Heleen’s musical activities include a series of diverse projects where new music and extended techniques for piano are the starting-point. She has just released a cd on the Entr’acte label with fellow composer Esther Venrooy (piano and electronics), which was positively received in publications such as ‘The Wire’.
She also maintains a strong interest in improvised music through her work with several groups and projects exploring around new music.
Her solo recitals draw on her extensive repertoire of experimental pieces by the likes of James Tenney, Morton Feldman, Alvin Lucier, Guy De Bièvre, George Crumb, Peter Garland etc. etc. and also her own compositions including a series of Horspiele based around Dominique Esquirol, a French psychiatrist.
Heleen studied at the Ghent conservatory with Claude Coppens and Daan Vandewalle. She undertook improvisation lessons with Godfried Willem Raes (Logosfoundation) which were crucial for her musical development. She has also attended master classes with Jan Michiels, Boyan Vodenicharov, Louis Pas, John Tilbury, Luc Vaes, and Claire Chevalier.
She has performed extensively across Europe in solo recitals and improvising groups including appearances at Festival of Flanders, Blue note Festival, Happy New Ears, Courtisane, International filmfestival (Rotterdam), Ossia Fine Arts (Chicago), Brakke grond (Amsterdam) etc.

Jez riley French :
‘My work focuses on the exploration of detail via intuitive composition and extended field recording techniques.
Elements such as sonic architecture, audible silence and compositional arcs have evolved from my need to remain open to my emotive, intuitive response to situations and environments. In performance and installation, my work aims to re-focus the attention of the audience on the overlooked and the simple nature of our surrounding inspirations – to capture the joyful and passionate, essential, powerful, minute and massive nearness of the objects and events that affect us’ - Jez riley French 2008-07-24
Known for his work with extended and conventional field recording methods, Jez has also established the term ‘intuitive composition’ to capture work that explores the area between formal composition and improvised music. His work has been performed, installed, published and exhibited extensively across Europe and he is currently engaged on his ‘in place’ project to document the audible architecture of various buildings.
