DECEMBER 19th - PLEASE NOTE - FRIDAY DATE
****UNDERGROUND RAILROAD****
www.myspace.com/urailroad
To celebrate the new wave of French bands, which include Nelson, Fuck Buttons and The Plasticines, we have one of our favourites who quite perfectly embody the smouldering 'fuck you' of rock n roll.
Underground Railroad manage to fuse Sonic Youth, Television, Jesus and Mary Chain to an effect that is utterly cool!
"Prepare for some unbridled hyperbole, because ‘Sticks And Stones’ is an aural representation of just how cool the ’90s were until Chris Cornell and his shirt phobia ruined everything. It’s Nirvana; it’s Neutral Milk Hotel; it’s My Bloody Valentine minus the overriding preoccupation with giving the entire world tinnitus.
You’d be hard-pushed to find a more ruthlessly honed post-punk melee with this much bite, so you might as well start digging out your stripy jumpers and battered Converses from the wardrobe now." Rebecca Robinson NME
****THE XX****
www.myspace.com/thexx
The XX have an engaging sound somewhere between dark synthy krautrock, trip-hop and soul.
From their cover of Womack & Womack's Teardrops to their own material showcasing brilliant use of xylophones and glockenspiels alike, their music is both sublime and dreamlike while having great dancefloor appeal!
Watch out for their tracks, which gradually build and layer to an intense atmospheric effect, before exploding into brooding bass lines and eerie vocal grooves.
"There is nothing quite like hearing a band so compelling, so exciting and so directly brilliant for the first time that you can't leave them alone, can't shake them and are left virtually paralysed to do anything else…. The XX are dangerously sexy."
Padraic Halpin, Ragged Words
****CAPTIVE STATE****
www.myspace.com/captivestatemusic
Captive State have been described as a group to bring insanely joyous grins to people's faces. With nine-members to the band, this is an ensemble who can provoke the most positive physical reaction that has been seen for a long time.
Centred around DJs, an articulate MC, they are a mix of 'rocktronica' and jazz percussion producing a style which is refreshingly hard to pin down. Brian Eno is a fan!
"There is another feather in the Captive State hat - a refreshing unpredictability that hints sometimes at XTC but evades capture. It bodes well for their debut album." MusicOmh.com
