Two For Joy, Global Local and Cut A Shine present: A Winter Solstice Barn Dance and Festival Showcase at London's Cargo, Shoreditch.
Global Local is an Arts Council funded project that hunts down and provides a platform for the most cutting edge, up and coming acts from a whole host of genres. Whether Roma or a Rumba, these artists are remixing their culture with the myriad of 21st Century styles that exist in the UK today. The fresh new sound of contemporary UK/World music have appeared at 22 Global Local stages at UK festivals this year including Glastonbury and Bestival.
For this night, we showcase some of the hottest acts to emerge on the new folk scene who will be making waves at festivals in 2010. These include:
Cut A Shine: already festival stalwarts and hosts of this event, Cut A Shine have brought their HoeDown vibes to over 40 festival gigs in the last two years!
Sheelanagig: have been honing their eclectic blend of folk, jazz and world music since early 2005. Equally at home on festival stages, music venues and street corners the band have developed a devoted following with two album releases and a hectic touring schedule. Blistering live performances have made Sheelanagig festival favourites across the UK and into Europe, and caused dancefloor mayhem from the Scottish Islands to the South of Italy. The five members of Sheelanagig bring a wide range of musical backgrounds to the band’s unique sound, and are united by their commitment to energetic performance with the highest quality instrumental music.
The Cedars are a UK based Alt-Americana quartet, with soaring vocals, infectious rhythms and blasts of slide guitar and banjo. Plying tales of lost love, revenge and rural homicide, The Cedars manage to straddle the divide between the dancehalls of the 20's and 30's and what's going on in the scene right now.
The Belles of London City are London's very own all dancing corseted female morris troupe, presently taking the folk world by storm. The troupe consist of Michelle Bloom, Ellen Hobson and Alex Merry- who delight the crowds with their hanky waving and bell jingling. Dancing mostly Cotswold morris, they are newly formed group that (literally) sprung out of Cecil Sharp House in London. Our fiddle playing gentlemen are Jerry Bloom and Nick Goode.
