Alexander Hawkins Quartet

Presented by: Vortex Jazz
0LONDON: Vortex
PTuesday 5th January, 2010
N8:30pm

Event information

This new quartet comprises three of the country's most exciting young musicians, alongside internationally-established master Mark Sanders ('the most exciting, original and overwhelmingly powerful drummer alive', Steve Reynolds).

Alexander Hawkins (piano) has been said to be ‘…one of the most striking voices of his generation, both with unique things to say and unique ways of expressing them…jazz taken to the edge and then pushed over, because there really was nowhere else to go’ (David Grundy).

Shabaka Hutchings (reeds) is 'a veritable cauldron of creativity...gloriously uncompromising...almost overwhelmingly powerful...an emerging Brit-jazz rising star if ever there was one' (Jazzwise).

The double bass of Dominic Lash is 'explosive' (The Guardian), and 'following in an illustrious lineage...breathtaking' (All About Jazz).

Passionate and intense, the group's performances take in original compositions, free improvisations, as well as works by Ornette Coleman, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, and others.

'Fire and Brimstone rained down...Hawkins’ compositions were stimulating in invention and engaging in form...fearsome thunderous expression' (Jazzwise).
