The Magpie's Nest Collective welcome The Lunar Society to London to showcase two of the hottest new modern folk bands from the Midlands – Goodnight Lenin and The Old Dance School. The Lunar Society is a regular contemporary folk and acoustic music event organised by the people behind the sell out and ever popular Moseley Folk Festival in Birmingham.
GOODNIGHT LENIN
Goodnight Lenin caught the attention of audiences in Birmingham after releasing a YouTube video of a simple acoustic performance in which they sat perched on the counter tops of their kitchen. The group attribute their sound to Bob Dylan and Elvis Perkins, mixing folk with a heavy American influence.
With the focus on lyrics; this bright young five piece combine guitar, bass, mandolin, and drums with beautiful harmonies to make their own form of modern folk.
2010 is set to be a great year for the band as they will be supporting First Aid Kit on the Birmingham leg of the duo’s UK tour before releasing their first limited edition single in the summer. Despite this, Goodnight Lenin can still be found performing amongst the pots and pans in kitchens.
THE OLD DANCE SCHOOL
The Old Dance School formed in 2006 and rehearsed in the garden of the old Betty Fox School of Ballet in Birmingham, where lies the origins of their name. Three years, 30,000 miles and several trips to A&E later, The Old Dance School’s distinctive concoction of explosive, white knuckle folk is blowing up a storm on the festival scene.
This twinkly-eyed six piece band features duelling fiddles and hair-raising world percussion evoking images of wind-swept headlands, witches and wild vertical adventures.
Their first album ‘Based on a True Story’ was released in 2008 on their own label and was championed by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris.
