We have been granted £1,000 by Dulwich Community Council towards the cost of the performance of Benjamin Britten's community opera, which will be performed by local school pupils and adult musicians.
Britten based the opera on the biblical story of the Flood as presented in a one of the 13th Century Chester series of Mystery Plays.
Floods seem highly topical at present, especially in Herne Hill. Whether there is any connection with human wrong-doing, which allegedly led to the Biblical flood, we will leave to one side.
However, what fitter start could there be to the presentation of Community Operas in Herne Hill than Benjamin Britten's Noye's Fludde, written to be performed mostly by children and by amateur musicians.
We plan to perform this amazing opera on the last day of our 2014 Festival. The performance will involve:
- Rosendale School, JAGS, and other local schools.
- as well as a large number of local musicians, the Calton Quartet, and professional soloists
