Tommy Andrews Quintet:

Tommy Andrews: Saxophone
Nick Costley-White: Guitar
Rick Simpson: Piano
Dave Manington: Bass
Dave Hamblett: Drums

The Tommy Andrews Quintet make their debut London Jazz Festival performance. The group will play compositions from the new album 'The Crux' (Jellymould Jazz) and perform the newly composed 'Galilean Suite'. The quintet is quickly gaining a reputation as one of London’s most exciting up-and-coming groups with 'The Crux' gaining critical acclaim right from the off.

Many genres are combined to great effect, blending the cinematic power of progressive rock and film-music with the dynamic subtleties of classical music, British Jazz and minimalism. The addition of improvisation into this then creates a unique and memorable sound that will excite and surprise audiences with all musical tastes.

Tommy Andrews:
[The Crux] is a great example of an emerging talent stretching his wings.' John Norbury-Lyons, JazzUK

'Tommy Andrews knows how to translate the notes-on-the-page aspect of composition to performance without something somehow being lost in the process.

[Tommy] is an intuitive improviser again like Speake, and his writing integrates group interplay with soloistic space so instinctively. Cerebral jazz that keeps you listening to reach the heart of the matter just as you guess Andrews intends.' Stephen Graham, Marlbank
.
“Tommy Andrews is a highly gifted young saxophonist and composer and I'm really into all the great things he's up to musically. I look forward to seeing what he gets up to in the future.” Michael Janisch, Whirlwind Records.

Let Spin:

Moss Freed - guitar
Ruth Goller - bass
Chris Williams - saxophone
Max Hallett - drums

Formed in 2012, Let Spin is a collective that forges the progressive post-jazz scenes of London and Manchester, bringing together four top genre-crossing instrumentalists from around the UK: bassist Ruth Goller (Acoustic Ladyland), saxophonist Chris Williams (Led Bib), guitarist Moss Freed (Moss Project) and drummer Finlay Panter (Beats & Pieces Big Band). Just two months after their first rehearsal and subsequent UK tour, the band recorded their eponymous debut album, featuring compositions from each member and released in 2014 on Beats & Pieces leader Ben Cottrell’s Manchester-based Efpi label.

Musically egalitarian, the band’s output is varied without being wayward, diverse without feeling unfocused – riffs and grooves rub shoulders with rowdy free playing and softer melodies, and despite the imaginative mixture of ideas there’s a cohesive element between the musicians that ties the overall sound together. It is this unique and winning formula that has rallied critics and electrified audiences around the country. With an extensive Jazz Services and Arts Council England-supported tour behind them, a second recording in the pipeline and upcoming European festival appearances, there is a momentum behind Let Spin that is rarely seen on the UK jazz scene. 2014 will see Let Spin become ever more in demand as a technically-brilliant, raucous and refreshing live act.

"An original identity that promises to be one of UK jazz’s best… A significant new force" The Guardian

"A new prog-jazz supergroup” Jazzwise

"Excellent… four talented musicians who clearly possess original ideas and are not afraid to use them” All About Jazz

"British Punk Jazz with a wiry electrical crackle” Uncut

“The excitement generated transcends boundaries and genres… An emotional explosion” Be Bop Spoken Here

“Let Spin explore quirky themes, dark textures and knotty improv to fine effect” TimeOut

“[Let Spin] embrace rock fury and sonic overload…with blistering solos from Freed and Williams… The audience absolutely loved [it] and hollered for an encore” The Jazz Mann

“Modern, hectic and…gleefully bizarre…[they] had the audience spellbound.” London Jazz
