A new quintet led by saxophonist Byrne (a recent graduate from Trinity College of Music Masters programme) plays original compositions that lend themselves to ‘Exploration’ – the title of one of Byrne’s compositions and a manifesto for the group. Heavy grooves with outbreaks of swing; tight arrangements framing open-ended improvisation and abstract harmony mixed with melodic departures.
