The Vortex is very happy to host the London African Music Festival.
Larger than life Nigerian percussionist Lekan Babalola is one of the world’s greatest percussionists described by the Washington Post as a “wizard percussionist”, with a career that with the likes of Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, Lucky Ranku and winning Grammies with Cassandra Wilson, Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabate. Last year he launched his new 7-piece band “Afrobeat Messengers” to create music that fuses American jazz and Nigerian afrobeat. The result is a band driven by infectious rhythms of Lekan Babalola.
Pianist Niran Obasa’s meditative solo piano music is highly influenced by his formal musical lessons in Nigerian churches.
