After the victory

After the Victory by Arvo Part and choral music from the Baltic States.

There was a feeling in 1991 that the national culture and sense of community in Estonia had been kept alive through the culture of singing. Still today, there are mass gatherings of many hundreds or even thousands of people who come together and sing in a collective out-pouring of identity and self-expression. This concert reflects that spirit and sense of cultural identity with a group of pieces from the Baltic States, together with a piece by the British composer Gabriel Jackson, which is about that singing culture and a commemoration of the singing revolution.

Arvo Part is probably the best known of the Estonian composers. Tobias is generally agreed to have been the first and has been described as being a continuation from Mendelssohn. Vask, a Latvian, writes music based on Latvian culture – in this case the naming of children. His musical style is beautiful and austere. Miskinis is Lithuanian.

The full list of pieces to be performed is:-

After the victory and Summa by Arvo Pärt
Our mother’s names by Vasks You can find more information at http://www.classicstoday.com/review/vasks-love-latvia/
Alleluia by Martinaitis
Lucis Creator by Miskinis
Kleine Karfreitags Motette by Tobias
Our flags are wafting in hope and grief by Gabriel Jackson

This is unusual and little performed repertoire. It is absolutely stunning stuff!
