MATT HOME EUROPEAN QUINTET: \'SEARCHING FOR HOPE\'

Presented by: Verdict Jazz
0BRIGHTON: The Verdict
PFriday 23rd March, 2018
N7:00pm

Event information

Steve Fishwick (UK, trumpet) Herwig Gradishnig (Austria, tenor sax) Claus Raible (Germany, piano) Giorgos Antoniou (Greece, bass) Matt Home (UK, drums). Door/food 7.0 pm, music 8.30. Students £12 (see note below).

St. Elmo Sylvester Hope in his youth survived being shot by police and went on to become a feted New York musician who in the early to mid-1950s was friends with Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk and who recorded with several emerging stars including Clifford Brown, John Coltrane, Lou Donaldson, Jackie McLean and Sonny Rollins. In 1957 he moved to Los Angeles but, despite a successful collaboration with Harold Land, was unhappy there and returned to New York, where he died in 1957, aged 43.

This hard swinging European group is dedicated to rediscovering Hope\'s complex, challenging music, much of which has been transcribed and arranged by pianist Claus Raible. They have been working together since 2014, recorded their debut album \"Searching For Hope\" in 2015 while on tour in Germany, and are now for the first time performing a series of concerts in the UK. Do not miss them.
