Event information

Join Nazneen Ahmed for a evening of seafaring. The talk will outline some examples of how the religious practices of Muslim seafarers in the port cities of Southampton and London have been recorded in nineteenth century newspapers.

Drawing on recent discoveries during her work as the Southampton Stories Writer in Residence, Nazneen will compare the ways in which the religious festival of Muharram on the docks in the nineteenth century and Muslim seafarer burial processions in Southampton were reported in a range of newspapers, and also share findings from a recent project she has been developing with Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery and Muslim Council Southampton.
