Delighted to be welcoming back a live audience to the lofty acoustic of St Martin’s church and thrilled to be launching their new season, Epsom Chamber Choir’s autumn concert title is inspired by Edward Elgar’s The Prince of Sleep with words by Walter de la Mare. It isn’t the only work being performed to soothe the audience into a pleasant state of reverie: included in the programme are American composer Eric Whitacre’s Sleep and Crossing the Bar by C.H.H. Parry (words by Alfred Lord Tennyson).
There is something for everyone in this concert: amongst the other pieces being sung are audience favourites Herbert Howells’ Requiem, Stanford’s Justorum Animae, Holst’s Nunc Dimitis as well as Lux Aeterna, a choral setting of Elgar’s Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. The choir are also proud to be championing female composers by performing two pieces by contemporary female writers: Dona nobis pacem by English composer Olivia Sparkhall and a contrasting version of Crossing the Bar by American Rani Arbo. A perhaps unexpected addition to the programme is by another American, Billy Joel. Better known for his popular solo hits, his song And So It Goes, arranged by Bob Chilcott for The King’s Singers 25th Anniversary Jubilee, is possibly the surprise entry for the evening.
Tickets £14 in advance. £16 on the door. Under 18's free.
We are planning to make highlights from the concert available online in due course. Please see the choir’s website for details.
