Telling Tales: An introduction to narrative art with Peter Jones

Presented by: Southampton Cultural Services
0SOUTHAMPTON: City Art Gallery - LECTURE THEATRE
PSaturday 25th March, 2023
N1:50pm

Event information

This talk will look at narrative paintings by different artists from the past to the present, including these featured in our current exhibition Telling Tales, featuring masterpieces of the genre from the collections of both Southampton and Russell Cotes. Despite the objections to narrative painting and the rise of abstract art, this talk will consider the enduring appeal of narrative art.

Peter Jones is an independent researcher and writer. His research interests include modern and post-war British art, and the dynamic between art and popular culture. He graduated from Middlesex University with a First Class Honours degree in History of Art and History of Ideas. Peter also has an MA in Contemporary Art and Theory from Winchester School of Art where he was awarded the Plincke, Leaman and Brown Art History Prize (Joint) in 1994. For some twenty years he worked at various UK Further and Higher Education institutions, and was an Open University Art History residential school tutor during 2001-14. Peter was also a research assistant and acting registrar at Southampton City Art Gallery, and has written on British painting in the collection, in particular its holdings of Surrealist art.

This talk will last around an hour with the opportunity to explore the exhibition before and afterwards.

In the unlikely event of our having to cancel a session, we will offer a full refund. Unfortunately, tickets are otherwise non-refundable. Please contact us if you wish to transfer your ticket to a friend if you cannot attend for any reason.
