The December programme includes two symphonies which represent their composers’ final thoughts. The Seventh Symphony of Sibelius compresses symphonic form and a powerful journey into a concentrated 21-minute span. After this symphony appeared in 1924, Sibelius published nothing further, but an eighth symphony existed in sketches which went on the bonfire, leaving the one-movement Seventh in awesome finality.
By contrast Elgar’s Third Symphony was begun late in life and left as a bundle of sketches when the composer died, which fortunately didn’t reach the bonfire, allowing Anthony Payne to elaborate them into a performing edition.
Saint-Saën’s Third violin concerto is considered one of his best-known works and was premiered in October 1880 in Hamburg when the composer was 55 years old.
