Two of the UK’s most innovative improvisers, Rhodri Davies and Mark Sanders, unite for an extraordinary performance of world-class music featuring a rare meeting of harp and percussion. Davies and Sanders defy expectations and cross genre boundaries creating music which is intimate, inventive and full of adventure.

The Rising Sun is known for championing creative risk-takers and fostering community through the arts. It is the perfect stage to immerse yourself in the immediacy of live creation from two of the country’s top exponents of improvised music.

The Artists:

Rhodri Davies is widely recognised for redefining the possibilities of the harp. With a career spanning two decades, he has collaborated with luminaries across the international experimental music scene and consistently forged new sonic territory. Davies’s approach is uncompromising and fiercely creative. He is acclaimed for his solo work as well as collaborations with artists such as John Butcher, Evan Parker, and Eliane Radigue and a notable recent collaboration with Richard Dawson

Mark Sanders, a master percussionist, is celebrated for his deft touch, lightning reflexes, and ability to conjure rhythm from the most unexpected corners. His collaborations across genres read like a who’s who of music including collaborations with Paul Dunmall, Peter Brötzmann, Jah Wobble, Wadada Leo Smith. He is one of the most in-demand drummers and percussionists in improvised music, equally at home in jazz, free improvisation, and contemporary classical settings.

Support from Dominic Lash who will be playing a solo double bass set. Dominic is a double bassist and guitarist. His most regular current collaborators include John Butcher, Angharad Davies, Heather Roche, Pat Thomas, and Alex Ward. He runs the label Spoonhunt and curates the Cambridge improvised music series Soundhunt with N.O. Moore.

Autumn Fire is a short series of improvised music gigs showcasing some of the countries top improvisers. The season continues with:
