Kalia

Presented by: Green Note
0LONDON: Green Note
PFriday 21st October, 2011
N7:00pm

Event information

Kalia grew up surrounded by folk music on the island of Crete in Greece. She currently lives in London performing nay (Arabic flute) and voice with Syriana (Real World Records), Paprika and Dunya Duo. This ensemble presents traditional music collected from her travels and extensive studies with some of the region's best singers and musicians as well as her own original material. Singing in a variety of languages such as Greek, Turkish and Arabic, Kalia tells folk tales of love and betrayal, sorrow and celebration and nostalgia for far-away homelands. Joining her are Vasilis Sarikis on frame-drums (Natasha Atlas, Shekoyokh, Attab Haddad) Nikos Baimpas on kanoun (Estoudiandina), and Colin Somervell on double bass (Trio Tekke, Nang Naak). The resulting sound is a musical landscape evoking the wild and rugged mountains of Greece and the sunlight of the Mediterranean coast.
