A young pianist of astonishing virtuosity and imagination, Cuban-born Alfredo Rodríguez calls up images of legendary jazz pianists like Keith Jarrett, Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum, Bill Evans, his compatriot Chucho Valdés and his mentor Quincy Jones.
Schooled in the classical conservatories of Havana, Rodríguez’s riveting artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as by his Cuban and jazz roots.
Tonight, joined by bassist Reinier Elizarde and drummer Henry Cole, Rodríguez performs from his debut album Sounds of Space, out this autumn on Quincy Jones’ Qwest Records.
“Rodriguez’s talent for finding emotional truth in the split-second fall of a piano key has brought him to the verge of an improbable success story. In his brief set, Rodriguez demonstrated his elegant yet explosive technique and command of an array of musical idioms" (Los Angeles Times).
