She’koyokh is Britain’s best klezmer and Balkan music band and winners of the Netherlands’ International Jewish music competition. Their evolution spans the humble origins of busking at East London’s Columbia Rd flower market to performing in the famous concert halls of Europe including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Gasteig in Munich and London’s Purcell Room.
The international line up consists of UK – based musicians who have traveled and studied with master musicians in Eastern Europe and Turkey. On vocals they have a secret weapon in Istanbul-born sensation, Cigdem Aslan.
She’Koyokh is a Yiddish expression meaning something like “nice one”. Expect a thrilling mix of klezmer, Sephardic, Russian, Kurdish, Turkish, Greek, Hungarian and Bulgarian music, most of which would traditionally be played at weddings. Often songs and dance tunes claimed by one nation or community are shared by several, and the ensemble makes full use of this overlap, creating a musical and linguistic melting pot.
She'Koyokh has two albums released by ARC Music, the latest of which received a five-star review in Songlines and was described as "a brilliant CD from an exhilarating party band".
