There is a long tradition of poets being inspired by other people's work. Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath often drafted their poems on the same page and Carol Ann Duffy recently produced an anthology 'Answering Back' where contemporary poets took a poem and wrote their own poem in response, sometimes agreeing with it, sometimes arguing with it, sometimes using a line or a phrase to inspire their own poem. During this workshop Kim Moore, one of our young-poets-in-residence, will lead a series of exercises that uses contemporary poetry to provide starting points for new poems. You will read and discuss each poem, then use them as springboards for new work. This may involve 'answering back', or using the structure of the poem as a frame to create your own text, or violently disagreeing with the poem!
