A star of the country/bluegrass scene in America in his early teens, mandolin player/ vocalist Chris Thiles has channelled his considerable talents into two extraordinary groups, Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, creating a sound that is powerful, off-kilter and, at times, almost surreal.
Elton John, always an excellent judge of new musical talent, is a big fan.
This new CD takes Thile firmly back to his roots as he and guitarist Michael Daves play lightning-fast interpretations of traditional bluegrass.
The blend of instruments and voices is sublime, particularly on the Everlys-ish You’re Running Wild, but that wonderful, hypnotic oddness still lurks.
