Carl Ludwig Hubsch is a collosus of the German Free Jazz and composition scene. His band Primordial Soup which features such heavy weights as Alex Dorner and Frank Gratkowski pushes the musicians and the boundaries of sound and composition to the limits.
Through the use of self-invented performance techniques, his tuba acquires completely new and unexpected characteristics as a brass instrument. For the first time he will be playing a duo with another giant of the tuba, Oren Marshall in what proposes to be a fascinating encounter. The second part of the evening will be structured around an equally intriguing but very different encounter in sound exploration; a duo with saxophonist John Butcher and a small group including bass player John Edwards.
CARL LUDWIG HÜBSCH
Born in Freiburg, Carl Ludwig Hübsch grew up playing clarinet in the local brass band and drums in punk- and rock bands. Around 83 he exchanged the clarinet for a tuba. Mostly self teached, he explored all kinds of music including a wonderful mediocre dance music trio. Musical roots to be mentioned are Frank Zappa, King Sunny Ade, The Dead Kennedys ...
The discovery of Jazz and Improvisation led to studies in Improvisation with M.A.Fataah. Hübsch received certification at the Pedagogic College in Freiburg in singing, theory, drums. He studied electronic music with Klaus Weinhold. In Cologne he studied as guest in the composition class with Johannes Fritsch. Since 1990 Carl Ludwig Hübsch has lived in Cologne where he finally awarded a livelong stipendium at his own university.
Hübsch's work focusses on Improvised Music and Conteporary Music. He composes and performs in concert halls, studios and theatres lending his talents to ensembles and orchestras.
OREN MARSHALL
A pioneering player of acoustic and electric tuba Oren Marshall crosses between the classical-jazz-improvised-world music and has collaborated with the likes Of Bobby Mcferrin, Derek Bailey, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Moondog, the Pan African Orchestra and the London Philarmonic.
JOHN BUTCHER
John Butcher is a saxophonist of rare grace and power, who has expanded the vocabulary of the saxophone far beyond the conventions of jazz and other musics, to encompass a staggering range of harmonics, multiphonics, overtones, percussive sounds, and electronic feedback. But his playing is far more than merely an array of special effects; it's characterised by a drive and intensity that propels music into strange new places that are both incredibly beautiful and deeply exhilarating.
"In the hands of London improvisor John Butcher, the saxophone can sound like anything, from a peice of hollowed out brass baubled with pads and valves to a hermetically sealed feedback system, a minature sound enviroment teeming with ever-evolving note forms, or a huge echo chamber inflicting dub scale damage on every breath."
