Event information

saltpeter is proud to present the launch of The Brautigan Book Club.

The Librarian can’t possibly leave the library.

“I don’t know. All I know is that I have to be there. It’s my job. I have to be there.”

The Librarian, presiding over the evening, will be presented with 'submissions' he can no longer catalogue - for example, songs by Gruff Rhys and Martin Carr; a planned film by an artist based on the mass-produced print of The Grand Tetons that graced his mother's mantelpiece for many years; the uncontrollable interjections from the floor of the ghost of Mark Twain; and another submission outside of written or even verbal language.

Submissions from the following are on the way:
Martin Carr
Gruff Rhys
Joe Duggan - a genuine poet, unlauded and financially desperate
Louise Stern and Aaron Williamson
Polly Frame
and
Radio producer Katherine Godfrey will be requiring your participation in gathering audio material...

Inspired by Richard Brautigan’s novel *The Abortion- An Historical Romance 1966, The American Forever, Etc., takes its title from the shady organisation that funds the library in that novel.

*The Abortion is a novel concerning the librarian of a very unusual California library which accepts books from anyone who wishes to drop one off at the library — children submit tales told in crayon about their toys; teenagers tell tales of angst and old people drop by with their memoirs—described as "the unwanted, the lyrical and haunted volumes of American writing" in the novel.
